Introduction

As part of its literacy promotion campaign, Open Minds Book Club held its fourth outreach program at Kpatcheremidor D/A Basic School on September 21, 2024. The initiative aimed to provide educational resources and inspire young learners to embrace the habit of regular reading for academic and personal growth.

Activities

The outreach was marked by a series of engaging and impactful activities involving both students and staff:

  • Meeting with Teachers: Volunteers met with the school’s teachers to present stationery supplies and discuss ways to support the school’s reading culture. This also provided an opportunity to explain the vision of Open Minds Book Club and how future collaborations can benefit the students further.

  • Student Engagement and Reading Sessions:

Volunteers interacted with 150 students, reading aloud to them and leading discussions on the importance of regular reading. The students were encouraged to use books as tools to improve their vocabulary, sharpen their thinking skills, and expand their knowledge.

  • Donation of Books and Materials:

A total of 250 textbooks and storybooks were donated and distributed among students and the school’s library. These books, provided by volunteers and generous donors, are expected to significantly enrich the school’s learning environment.

  • Sharing of Snacks and Encouragement:

Light refreshments were shared with the students, adding joy and warmth to the day. Volunteers also left them with messages of encouragement, urging them to read often and challenge themselves to learn new words and ideas through books.

Impact and Reception

The visit brought smiles to the faces of the children and teachers alike. The school community received the donations with great appreciation and expressed their gratitude for the support and care shown. The students were particularly enthusiastic during the reading sessions and appeared motivated to explore their new books.

Conclusion

The fourth outreach by Open Minds Book Club at Kpatcheremidor D/A Basic School was a memorable and meaningful experience. The initiative not only provided educational resources but also planted seeds of curiosity and a love for reading in the hearts of the students. Open Minds Book Club looks forward to continuing its mission to cultivate young minds through reading and learning.
