Changing the Story of Literacy in Ghana
We envision a Ghana where every child - no matter their region or background - has the opportunity to read, learn, and thrive. Our mission is to close the literacy gap in rural communities by inspiring a love for reading from infancy.
Our Mission
Our goal is to revive the rich culture of storytelling and inspire children in Primary and Junior High Schools to read storybooks, helping them build stronger reading skills, spark creativity, and grow into confident learners.
Literature is a basic part of Ghanaian tradition and the culture of storytelling also, however in recent times, that culture is diminishing from our homes and classrooms. We believe that this organization would join the host of organizations in realizing Sustainable Development Goal 4 in ensuring exclusive equitable and quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all to reduce literacy poverty in Ghana.
Future long-term projects of Open-Minds Book Club are for us to have annual spelling competitions for schools in rural areas per district and monthly reading sessions. We also desire to have a campaign dubbed the Good Book Campaign in partnership with other organizations, which would be focused on promoting books that encourage positive behaviors among children. There would be quarterly outreaches done in various schools in rural areas in the regions in Ghana to donate books for the building of what we term mini libraries/mobile Libraries. The organization may presently not have sufficient funds to build infrastructure for libraries in the schools visited, therefore we work towards ensuring that the tools for reading which are text books and story books, for the Primary and Junior High School would be provided as well as some stationery which can be kept well by the teachers for the kids to read in their leisure time.
It is our project plan to encourage schools in the rural areas to designate an hour to active reading and storytelling from the books we donate to them as a cocurricular activity, i.e. having open reading sessions. Therefore, there would be an Open-Minds Book Club in every school visited in the rural areas to encourage the habit of reading and continuity.
